Denied promotions, awkward stares, and whispers in the office are kept very tidy by Human Resource departments across America. It would be very hard to believe that weight, looks, and other health issues haven't play a role in career advancement in Corporate America. Proving discrimination in the workplace can be almost impossible at best. Pan American Airways agreed to pay .35 million to 116 women who were discriminated against for being overweight in 1989 and hundreds of cases would follow in the 90's, but as the years pass, these types of cases in Corporate America are becoming extinct.

Healthcare costs have been the highest in recent years with many corporations forced to flip the bill for their employees. As a result, many companies have agreed to increase premiums for those who are overweight, smokers, have high cholesterol, and various other health impacting issues. The premise of the increase was to reward healthy behavior and help those with habit related problems. This may seem discriminatory however many healthy workers would disagree. Healthy workers who visit the doctor 1 to 2 times a year have been paying the same premiums as unhealthy workers who on average visit the doctor 9-13 times annually.

How Do New Lifestyle Shakes Compare to Medifast Shakes?

The new lifestyle and Medifast diets are somewhat similar to one another (there are some key differences however). Both diets offer shakes which are quite popular. People often ask me how the shakes compare to one another in terms of nutrition, taste, texture and price. So in the following article, I'll attempt to compare the shakes on both of these diets.

First though, I should disclose that I have more experience with the Medifast products. I have tried and tasted new lifestyle products because I have a coworker on this diet who was kind enough to allow me to sample some of the meals. Now, onto the comparisons.

Nutrition, Ingredients, Calories, Carbs And Proteins: I think that one of the most important comparison between these two is going to have to do with their nutrition. Because this is ultimately going to affect their effectiveness. If they can't get you into ketosis or a calorie and carb deficit, then you're probably going to abandon them anyway. And if the ingredients aren't healthy or diet friendly, what's the point?

How Do New Lifestyle Shakes Compare to Medifast Shakes?

So that I'm comparing similar products, I'm going to be looking at the chocolate shakes for each diet. The new lifestyle diet's chocolate shake / pudding mix contains 100 calories, 14 grams of proteins, 7 grams of carbs and 1.5 grams of fat. Although I looked everywhere, I could not find the sugar content of these shakes. I find this to be somewhat important because one thing that I've noticed about these products is that they're sweetened with aspartame. For the most part, Medifast uses natural sugar substitutes like maltodextrin.

The Medifast dutch chocolate shakes contains only 90 calories, only one gram of fat, 11 grams of protein, 13 of carbs, and 8 grams of sugar. (Incidentally, this product only make the shakes. There are separate pudding and shake meals. It's not a two in one product in the way that the new lifestyle shakes are (since they make both pudding and shakes) I prefer this because I believe it makes the texture better.)

Taste And Cost: The new lifestyle shakes are .50 per box. The Medifast shakes costs around more if you're buying them individually. I find that this isn't an issue for a couple of reasons. First, I have to say that in my observation, very few people buy these products individually. Most people buy them as part of a package. And with coupons, the cost per meal generally goes down to just over each.

And second, you consume only 5 Medifast meals per day as opposed to 7 on the new lifestyle plan. So it will take more products each day which is ultimately going to potentially cost more. People often tell me that they think one diet is cheaper than the other, but I find this misleading since you have to consume 2 more meals per day on one of the diets.

I think that the biggest difference between these two is the taste. I just prefer the Medifast shakes but I suppose it could be that I've become so used to them. To me, they have more flavor and do not taste bland and chalky. Also, their texture is not as foamy and is more smooth and creamy which I prefer, but this is my personal preference. Yours may be different.

In June you can expect grey skies on a pretty regular basis and, believe it or not, rain. This is not like UK rain though - my country of origin. This is hot and steamy rain that leaves the air feeling heavy with moisture even when the raindrops stop falling.

My First Rainy Season

I remember my first rainy season here - I'd only been in Tokyo for about 2 months and was still adjusting to a complete change in lifestyle, diet and language - let alone weather. So in rolled rainy season. I'd heard about it - was warned about it even - but I just wasn't prepared. I woke up on the first grey day and went into British mode. It must be cold it's raining. Inside you have no idea about the temperature outside as air con units control the atmosphere. I brought out my warm clothes from the wardrobe and got myself ready for work.

Time to go. I opened the door... and wham! It was like walking into a sauna when someone's just thrown water over the hot coals. It wasn't so much the heat - although it was warm - but the wall of dampness that hit me. I immediately turned tail and pulled out some light cotton tops and a skirt, made a quick change, and finally set off to catch my train. I was feeling pretty uncomfortable after about 10 minutes of walking and realized why all the locals around me seemed to have dropped down a gear. Rainy season is not the right weather for rushing around.

What You Need to Bring

So. If you're visiting Tokyo in June, be prepared with an umbrella and bring some light clothes that won't cling to you when the humidity starts to peak. Do have something a little warmer with you as well as there are no constants - it can go from hot to luke warm over 24 hours. If you are a mosquito magnet, I would also bring something to keep them off you as they start to show their bites at about this time of year.

July is similar to June except the rain stops and the sun comes out to play. It's hot and humid still, just minus the rain. The hottest month in Tokyo is August with temperature topping out at 40 degrees C but July is still up there. Typical days are 30 or above.

Bring suntan lotion with you as it is not that easy to find some of the more familiar brand names here - and it's expensive. Also pack your deodorant. Recently the drug stores have started to sell a wider range of men's deodorant but us ladies have very little choice. For some reason the Japanese deodorants just don't seem to work on me either - no matter how much I put on. Thankfully my mum sends me regular packages so I don't offend the locals.

Don't forget your sunnies, some form of shade for your head, and your sense of humor. When the weather hots up, people's tempers can fray. All in all though you should have a good time - as long as you don't mind the heat.

The New Lifestyle Diet Versus Medifast - My Comparison

I have to admit that I've been receiving questions about this diet plan for a while and waited until now to write an article about it. The reason for this is partially because I don't have any personal experience with the New Lifestyle diet. My experience lies with Medifast. However, after doing some research on the newer diet for a while, I'm going to offer some basic comparisons between the two diets in the following article.

The Basic Outline Of Both Diets And The Foods Offered Are Somewhat Similar: Actually when I first looked at the foods for New Lifestyle, I was wondering if I was on the wrong website. The foods are very similar to those offered on Medifast. What I mean by this is that the shakes, protein bars, soups, stews, cereals, chips, and hot chocolates are all there. The two overlap very much in this regard.

Also, the idea of both diets is meal replacement. You're basically asked to eat the food that the diet company provides rather than your regular meals. Both of these plans have you eating 5 (Medifast) to 7 (New Lifestyle) meals per day and then one healthy meal that you make yourself which is mostly based on lean protein and low glycemic vegetables.

The New Lifestyle Diet Versus Medifast - My Comparison

So your experience on both of these diets might be similar in terms of eating small meals often (most of which you don't make yourself) and then eating a main meal once per day. In general, the foods should be high in proteins and low in sugars and carbs so that your body can get into ketosis where it's not burning carbs but is burning your own body fat. This is what supposedly makes both of these diets work.

Costs Comparison: Both of these diet plans offer packages as well as individual items for sale. In my experience, most dieters will opt for the package as this makes the cost per unit quite a bit cheaper. I've been noticing this perception that New Lifestyle is cheaper, but I don't find that to be the case in real life. Yes, if you compare both basic women's programs, New Lifestyle runs 3.00 and Medifast runs 9. But, this does not tell the whole story. Because, at least from my own experience, Medifast almost always offers very generous coupons which take your price on a package down by at least in many cases. This alone makes a huge difference and they will often offer free food.

Looking At The Ingredients: You may have already gathered that my experience lies with only one of these diets, which I'm pretty happy with. This fact alone might make me biased. I have had people ask me if I would consider switching based on costs. But, as I've said, I actually don't believe that Medifast is more expensive when you use coupons.

However, one thing that I have noticed is some of the ingredients in the other diet (which include corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, and aspartame.) Now, by no means am I an expert, but I suspect that corn syrup might not be conducive to getting into ketosis. When I started Medifast, I was concerned about the taste of the soy, but that just has not been an issue at all. The foods taste normal to me. And using soy rather than milk as a base for many of the products means less carbs and sugars and more protein, which in my experience, helps in ketosis.

Again, my experience lies with only one of these diets, but my comparison has affirmed for me that I'm happy with my current regimen and won't be changing over. Still, my experience with meal replacement diets such as these have been good. I'm just happy with the one that I am currently on. But I have found that meal replacement plans such as both of these are convenient and effective.
